The macula is the small part of the eye's retina that is responsible for our
central vision. This condition affects both distance and close vision and
can make some activities very difficult or impossible.

Over time, diabetes can damage blood vessels in the retina, the nerve layer
at the back of the eye that senses light and helps to send images to the brain.
